Genetics is everywhere - in the news, on the web, and in our lives in the 21st century. You simply have to understand it to know what's going on around you. BIO 325 is a rigorous introduction to modern genetics. You will learn the basics of how genes work, how they affect traits, how they are inherited, and most importantly, how we know all of these things. In addition, you will learn the basics of recombinant DNA technology, what the human genome project is all about, and how an individual person can be identified by their DNA.
We'll also talk about how scientists are using model organism genetics to learn everything from how we develop from a fertilized egg into a human being, to why we behave the way we do. Whether you are planning to go to medical school, graduate school, or are just interested in expanding your mind and analytical skills, here is your opportunity to learn the basics of genetics from a UT Professor who is actively doing genetic research in her own lab.

BIO 325, Genetics, is a prerequisite for all other upper-division biology courses at UT Austin.
Biology 311C (or 211) and 311D (or 214), with a grade of at least C- in each; or consent of University Extension advisor.
Biology 311C and 311D with a grade of at least C- in each.
