Influencing Up: Helping Your Boss Help You to Be Satisfied and Productive at Work

Course Details

People don’t leave their jobs. They leave their bosses. This is particularly true in the current job market where money is only one of many motivators and rewards for working in an organization, and where well-meaning employees can end up getting exploited or extremely frustrated by manipulative or disorganized superiors. This workshop will help participants identify and practice ways to help their bosses help them to be satisfied and productive at work for the benefit of their organizations, their teams and above all, themselves.

There is no prerequisite for this course.

Course Outline

  • Opening: welcome/framing, brief introductions, objectives/agenda, agreements, icebreaker
  • Definitions: what qualities and attributes does a good manager/boss/supervisor have? How likely are they to be found?
  • Myth busting: how to dispel the top five myths around managing up
  • Managing Up framework: three-step process for managing your manager more effectively
  • Skill building: group and individual exercises to help manage up more effectively in future (as time allows)
  • Closing: group dialogue and Q&A; individual reflection; action planning, prioritizing and next steps; closing circle and oral feedback; written final evaluation
