Most leaders today know that Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is as critical if not more critical than Cognitive Intelligence (IQ) to individual effectiveness in the workplace. But much work in organizations today is done in teams. This course will uncover what research indicates about emotional intelligence in teams and how to achieve it. Leaders today are challenged with how to find ways to make teams work better. Individual emotional intelligence has an impact on team effectiveness, and the group can develop greater emotional intelligence and boost their overall performance.

Research has repeatedly indicated that teams are more creative and productive when they achieve high levels of participation, cooperation, and collaboration. To make this happen, teams must foster an environment of mutual trust among members. Instill a feeling that members belong to a unique and worthwhile group (group identity), with a belief that the team can perform well and that group members are more effective when working together than apart (group efficacy). Emotions contribute to these conditions and handling these emotions well contributes to building emotional intelligence in teams.

In an era of teamwork, it is essential to understand what makes teams work, and just like individuals, the most effective teams are emotionally intelligent. This course will help participants learn what makes teams succeed and how to improve emotional intelligence on an individual and team level.

Outcomes

  • Learn the three basic conditions necessary to build emotional intelligence in teams
  • Learn three types of emotional interaction in teams: being mindful of the emotions of its members, its own group emotions or moods, and the emotions of other groups and individuals outside its boundaries
  • Learn how emotional incompetence in these areas can cause dysfunction in teams/groups
  • Learn how establishing specific group norms that create awareness and regulation of emotion at the individual, group, and cross-boundary level can lead to higher performance
  • Learn where norms come from in teams and groups
  • Learn specific approaches to building norms at the individual, group, and cross boundary level that create an awareness of emotions and help regulate emotions
  • Learn which specific emotional intelligence skills based on EQ-i™ results support building team emotional intelligence
  • Learn to map individual emotional intelligence competencies that need strengthening to build team emotional intelligence

*NOTE: Participants in this class will need to have taken Emotional Intelligence in Leadership 1 and 2 before taking this class as the results of their EQ-i™ Assessment will be used in this class.
