Certificate of Management – FAQs

Here are the most-asked questions about the Certificate of Management program.

  • How does admission to this certificate program differ from a traditional MBA?
This is not a degree program. You do not have to apply for admission to UT Austin. There is no out-of-state tuition rate, so all students pay the same $2,995 fee regardless of where they live. You will earn a certificate of completion and a letter acknowledging your earned grades.

  • What are the program admission requirements?
There are no specific academic prerequisites, but the ability to perform at a graduate academic level is needed as the content is challenging. Management experience is also preferred but the program can be highly valuable for those just moving into management roles. We suggest you complete and submit the online application so we can review your probable "fit" with the program.

  • When can I begin and how long does the program take to complete?
This is an open-enrollment, self-paced program. You may begin as soon as your application is approved and fee paid. Each of the 15 units requires an estimated 15 to 25 hours to complete, usually requiring two to three weeks for each unit. Students are encouraged to complete all components of the program within one year.

  • What is the online learning experience like?
Using your computer and a high-speed internet connection, you can access the video cases, self-test evaluations, additional reference materials, lectures and the graded unit quizzes. A course binder, which is provided, contains all of your printed materials and reading assignments. We have designed the program to be a highly interactive, multimodal learning environment. It offers the flexibility of self-directed online study, but supports your success with a multitude of learning tools.

  • Can everyone be successful in a self-paced program?
No. While there is a great deal of flexibility offered by such a program, it requires self discipline to be successful. We suggest students plan to spend five to 10 hours per week on coursework to move through the curriculum at a steady pace.

  • May I use this program for university course credit?
No, you are not applying to be a matriculating student at The University of Texas at Austin. However, in some cases, students may use the Certificate of Management as evidence of their ability to complete graduate-level academic work and this may be influential in being accepted into degree programs they might not otherwise qualify for.
