Are you fluent in both English and Spanish? Do you have an interest in healthcare? If so, you would be a great candidate for our Spanish/English Medical Interpreter Certificate Program.

Medical Interpreters serve as the bridge between healthcare professionals and patients with limited English proficiency. They are responsible for interpreting details about the patient to the doctor and also providing the patient with clear and concise information on topics such as surgical or medical care procedures, prescription drug information and how to properly complete medical documents. Due to the increasing number of foreign language speakers in the United States, Medical Interpreters are also trained in the cultural aspects associated with their language of proficiency and how to handle potential cultural conflicts. The need for Medical Interpreters is fast-growing and they have a place in facilities not limited to hospitals, ER, private practices, mental health clinics, rehab centers and more.

The Professional Development Center's Medical Interpreter Certificate Program is ideal for those seeking employment in the medical or healthcare fields or those seeking their first professional interpreting certificate. It also expands the career choices for bilingual individuals (proficient in Spanish and English) who already work in these fields. The program curriculum is consistent with national standards of practice for interpreters in healthcare.

Graduates of our program receive a Certificate of Completion and are prepared to take the NBCMI (National Board of Certified Medical Interpreters) exam or the CCHI (Certified Comission for Healthcare Interpreters) exam.

The Spanish/English Medical Interpreter Certificate Program covers:

  • Ethics of Interpreting
  • Healthcare interpreting terminology in English and Spanish
  • Spanish/English linguistics skills
  • Analysis of the healthcare provider environment and issues regarding Latino/Hispanic healthcare
  • Development of integrated interpreter skills
  • Understanding the cultural aspects of Latino/Hispanic healthcare

Becoming a professional interpreter is a learned and skill-based process. This 40-hour classroom training program equips you to serve as a professional medical interpreter. The program prepares you with the theoretic, linguistic and procedural backgrounds necessary to comply with the Medical Interpreting Standards of Practice.
