Course Details

Did you know that your professional image is impacted by your writing skills? The better your writing skills are, the better your image is and the better your chances for advancement. There is no doubt that effective writing in the workplace is an essential skill. Research shows that employers value workers who think creatively and communicate effectively.

The Writers at Work Certificate Program consists of four 10 hour courses that will allow busy professionals a flexible path toward learning valuable writing techniques. Although this course addresses the use of proper grammar and vocabulary, it is also designed to teach you the writing process with the goal of writing clear, concise and complete documents.

Course Format

  • Students will receive access 3-5 business days from date of enrollment. An email link will be provided to the student.
  • Writers at Work Certificate Program (Independent study (60% ) and instructor feedback (40%).
  • Four month enrollment from date of registration.
  • No extensions available.

    • Gain knowledge and understanding of parts of sentences and speech, ensuring sentence completeness and conquering common problems with subjects, verbs, and pronouns. The ability to identify and correctly use various kinds of punctuation.
    • The student will understand the ability to revise ineffective writing and to generate clear and concise writing.
    • Learn the ability to identify and revise unfocused and awkward writing and revise into clear and easy to understand text.
    • Understands the principles that are used to design documents that are visibly appealing.

    Course Descriptions

    Writers at Work: A Review for Professionals - Part I

    Course Description

    This is the first of four review courses that together provide an in-depth review of grammar and sentence structure. Part I of the review covers the most basic "nuts and bolts" of good writing: understanding parts of sentences and speech, ensuring sentence completeness and conquering common problems with subjects, verbs, and pronouns. Readings and exercises will help reinforce their understanding of the concepts. The course is self-study, but an instructor will be available for tutoring.

    Outcomes

    • The student will demonstrate the ability to identify and correctly use various parts of parts of speech.
    • The student will demonstrate an understanding of sentence completeness and an ability to recognize and revise fragments and run-on sentences.
    • The student will demonstrate an ability to recognize and to correct common problems with subject - verb agreement and errors in using pronouns.
    • The student will demonstrate an understanding of how to correct dangling and misplaced modifiers.

    Assessment:

    Students will be assessed through self-test exercises and a mastery test taken at end of the class.

    Writers at Work: A Review for Professionals - Part II: Punctuation

    Course Description

    Part II of the review covers punctuation, providing students with practical understanding of punctuation without forcing them to memorize countless rules. Weekly units teach the use of commas, semicolons, apostrophes, colons, quotation marks and parentheses. In this self-study course, tutorials and exercises help students ensure that they understand the concepts and can recognize and revise punctuation errors in their own writing.

    Outcomes

    • The student will demonstrate an ability to recognize various kinds of punctuations.
    • The student will demonstrate an ability to use commas correctly and to recognize and revise comma errors.
    • The student will demonstrate an ability to correctly use semicolons and colons.
    • The student will demonstrate an understanding of the use of dash, hyphens, apostrophes, parentheses, and quotation marks.

    Assessment:

    Self-test exercises that allow students to practice what they`ve learned. There is a mastery test at the end.

    Writers at Work: A Review for Professionals - Part III: Achieving Clear and Concise Writing

    Course Description

    Part III of the review will help the student understand the writing process with the goal of writing clear, concise and complete documents. Tutoring, readings, textbook and exercises help students ensure that they understand the concepts and can revise their own writing to be more clear, concise and grammatically correct.

    Outcomes

    • The student will understand the writing process.
    • The student will demonstrate the ability to recognize and correct common sentence errors that cloud the meaning and cause confusion.
    • The student will understand the ability to revise ineffective writing and to generate clear and concise writing

    Assessment:

    Writing exercises allow students to practice what they learn in each lesson.

    Writers at Work: A Review for Professionals - Part IV: Achieving a Professional Style

    Course Description

    Part IV of the review will help the student develop an emphatic and readable style and to design visually appealing documents. Exercises and instructor feedback will help students ensure that they understand the concepts and can revise their own writing to emphasize important points, flow logically, and appeal to the eye. Topics include managing sentence emphasis, creating parallel structures in sentences and paragraphs, maintaining flow and focus in sentences and paragraphs, and designing documents.

    Outcomes

    • The student will understand basic paragraph structure.
    • The student will understand the concept of parallelism as it applies to sentence structure.
    • The student will become aware of the different types of paragraph organization (compare/contrast, cause and effect, etc.)
    • The student will learn different techniques that can be used to make a document’s design more effective for a reader
    • The student will learn basic proofreading techniques.

    Assessment:

    Exercises/writing assignments that allow students to practice what they learn and receive instructor feedback
