The ancient art of knitting is still as beautiful and therapeutic as it has been for over one thousand years! Portable, therapeutic, and endlessly versatile, knitting is the perfect hobby for the busy women and men of today!
If you want a hobby that is relaxing and soothing, knitting offers the perfect balance of hand movement and mental quiet. If you are easily bored, knitting offers endless possibilities for creating complex, intricate, and beautiful objects.
In every class, you will learn and practice a new skill, learn several new aspects of the tools and techniques of your craft, and have an opportunity for trouble-shooting and guidance as you progress through the sample project(s) of your choice. Learn the basics of knitting, including knitting, purling, and basic increasing and decreasing. Step-by-step instructions for three basic projects will be presented—students will choose their project and may complete them with some work at home. For students with some experience knitting: instruction for complete beginners will be for continental-style knitting. Instructor will accommodate instruction for students who have had previous instruction with English-style knitting.
Your instructor will bring the materials necessary for learning and practicing a new skill each class. During the first class, you will be given suggestions and for purchasing materials for your own individual project(s). The projects have been selected to fit varying level of skill and time investment, and can be individualized to reflect your tastes. (Students are also welcome to bring in any other projects they choose to work on for help or instruction as well.)
Class Project Options
1) simple hat—Woman or man, hiking or shopping, cool or hot!
2) slippers—the holidays are coming! Knit these slippers as gifts (or not! )
3) Simple garter stitch scarf—after just the first class, you will have the skills necessary to knit this simple scarf with the yarn of your choice—the possibilities are endless!
Lessons will include a historical background on knitting, project selection, discussion of how yarn choice affects projects, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, reading the language of patterns, finishing techniques, and plenty of supervised practice and trouble-shooting. The classes will be lecture/demonstration and practice under supervision. Instructor will bring handouts, background music, and examples of products and techniques, as well as lists and examples of resources for further explanation.
Requirements: This class is for beginners. You do not have to have any knowledge or experience with knitting or handcrafts--just a desire to learn and create things.
Supplies needed: Instructor will provide fiber for first-class practicing and offer guidelines for students to purchase yarn before next class. Price of yarn will range according to project and yarn selected--approx. $10 to $20.
