Building Writing Skills for Adults with Intellectual Developmental Disabilities

Writing takes all different forms and methods, from writing lists with pen and paper to using “apps” to create a shopping list, from using the keyboard on a computer, to speaking into devices that produce the written word on the screen to print.  Our ability to identify the most efficient tool for capturing our thoughts and words from the most basic expression of our needs through the most complex purposes for writing impact our ability to communicate effectively.  This course is aimed at teaching adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to increase their potential for managing the world of the “written” word by exploring tools available to match their personal strengths and needs.

Students may be dropped off at the UT Littlefield Café at 5:30 p.m. to socialize for 30 minutes with each other and volunteer students from UT. Students will then participate in an interactive lessons on writing that is tailored to individual skill levels.  Here they can follow along with handouts of class slides and bring in their homework to discuss with their peers.  All classes are located in the Biomedical Engineering (BME) building across from the Littlefield Café.  Families can pick up their student by the café at 7:30 p.m.

There will be no class on Tuesday, July 1st.

This course is aimed at promoting life-long learning of mature topics for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) while providing an opportunity to connect socially with adult peers with and without IDD on the University of Texas at Austin campus.  Enrollment requires permission from the instructor to confirm that student has an intellectual or developmental disability.  Students new to our program are required to attend a pre-course orientation for student and family member.  Please contact Jon Pierce-Shimomura at (512) 232-4137, for details about the course and registration.Students must be age 19 or older.
